Whether you are relocating across the country or just to another town, relocating can be a stressful time at any age. As stressful as moving can be on parents, it can be even harder on kids. Fortunately, there are several tips that will help this tough transition be less stressful for you and easier on your kids.
Have A Family Meeting
Telling your kids about the move might be the hardest part about the relocation process. So how you tell them is extremely important. Being open and honest about the move will be more beneficial in the long run. If you’re moving because of a promotion, tell them why you are excited about this amazing opportunity. Explain to them your feelings towards the move and encourage them to do the same. Let them know that everyone will be in this together, from packing the first box to unpacking the last.
Organize A Moving Sale
Figure out everything you want to pack and everything you want to give away and organize a moving sale! This is an easy, fun way to get the kids involved. They can help organize, price and tag it all. The best part about a moving sale is all the money you make once it is over. Have the proceeds from the sale go towards something for the whole family to enjoy. Maybe it’s a new flat screen TV for your new home or maybe it’s a new puppy because what kid doesn’t want an adorable new puppy to play with. The more invested the kids are, the more helpful they will be throughout the move.
Research The New Place
Learn as much as possible about your new community and town. Encourage your kids to do the same and share all the information everyone has found. However, do your best to not oversell, you don’t want your kids to have high expectations because that means there is room to be let down. If you are able to do this, do a site visit as a part of your research. Plan a day or a weekend for the whole family to go out to the new town and explore all that your new area has to offer.
Make Room Plans
Remember when we said the more your kids are invested, the more they will help? Well making room plans if the perfect way to get them excited about the move. If they are interested in helping with decorating, let them help. Buying new furniture? Take them with. If you have teens, give them a budget to spend on their room and let them plan away. For younger kids, you can still set a budget but help them execute what they have envisioned for their new room.
Host A “See You Soon” Party
Goodbyes are hard at any age. Instead of hosting a going away party, host a “see you soon” party. With all the technology these days it’s hard not to keep in touch with friends. Between texting, social media and phone calls, your kids will easily be able to maintain old friendships while still making new ones. Also, depending on how far you will be moving away, talk to the other parents about planning a weekend visit as something to look forward too for your kids.
